If you have a teenage daughter, you probably heard plenty about the devastation caused by the departure of Zayn Malik from One Direction. I don't know all the details my teen son is not into boy bands but I did see the many images of teenage tears all over the internet. At first, I thought it was absurd that so many girls would feel this way but then I remembered the younger me, the 9-year-old who lost her voice at her first Menudo concert at Madison Square Garden. I was the one whose clothes were filled with holes from buttons; the girl who made her mom buy every vinyl they made, the ultimate fan who left school early to be at Miguel's farewell event. It goes beyond that. I even flew to Puerto Rico in when they did their first Reencuentro concert. I once stopped by the Today Show to see them in person, and I got to meet them. I hugged Miguel and thanked him for many years of childhood happiness.

Irresistibly catchy, unapologetically inauthentic, sexy and they know it — the boy band is the most fabulously pre-fab of all musical outfits. As music has evolved, so have boy bands. Sometimes they are total strangers, sometimes they have known each other since birth. But like any other form art, you know a boy band when you see one. The main defining factor? The Surrey, England trio Bros epitomized the late Eighties Young Conservative air of steely determination: money, power and success at any cost. Twins Matt and Luke Goss, along with schoolmate Craig Logan, prioritized fame and fashion over brotherly bonhomie the increasingly sidelined Logan quit, then sued the brothers. The mean streak in their lyrics, their distinctive crewcuts and bomber jackets, and their penchant for wearing Grolsch bottlecaps on their shoes made them ripe for parody and vitriol in the press. The premise was simple: a boy band with actual boys. In the video, the group gets chased by girls around New York City and dances on top of the Brooklyn Bridge.
1. They were the first Latino boy band ever.
The band achieved much success, especially during the s, becoming the most popular Latin American teen musical group of the era and selling some 20 million records worldwide. The band was a starting point for both Ricky Martin —89 and Draco Rosa —87 , who were members around the mids during their youth. In the late s, Menudo had several local hits in Puerto Rico, including their first major hit, "Los Fantasmas", and a cover version of ABBA 's "Voulez-Vous" and "Chiquitita", the latter of which they filmed three music videos for, including one with music legend Ednita Nazario who sang with them and played the titular "Chiquitita" on the video. The album would launch Menudo into international stardom. They also had their own telenovela series entitled Quiero Ser.
They dropped their first album in and were together for 22 years. The band had a total image makeover, and so did their music. Oh man.
