A five-year-old sat shyly in her metal hospital bed as her mother described what had brought her to Panzi hospital in the city of Bukavu, in the far east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A couple of beds down lay a tiny six-year-old girl, and further along sat a speck of a three-year-old in a fuchsia hoodie. This smallest girl had been brought in the previous night and had a painful fistula from gang rape. In each case, what had been done to the girls is remarkably similar.

CHENNAI, India — After school, when the year-old girl rode her bicycle around the well-to-do apartment complex where she lived with her family in Chennai in southeastern India, an elevator attendant would find her and lead her to a basement, a rooftop or a public bathroom. Once there, he would inject her with an orange liquid or feed her a cold drink likely laced with drugs to immobilize her, then tie a belt around her neck and rape her, she later told her older sister. Over the course of seven months, they, too, raped and molested her, possibly dozens of times, using makeup to cover any marks they left on her, her sister said. A current of rage shot through Chennai last week after the police arrested 17 men , ages 23 to 66, for the assaults. Lawyers beat several of the men as they were curled up on the floor of a local courthouse. Frantic residents of the building where the girl lived organized round-the-clock shifts guarding the entrance. But a few days later, the police stopped answering calls from reporters. Around Chennai, people blamed the mother. She referred angrily to a news report about a woman who said she was raped by 40 men over four days.

H er family called her Twinkle. In the dry desert brush of Rajasthan where her body was found, blood spattering her tiny legs and brown school uniform and a belt fastened around her neck, she lay among scattered toffee wrappers. Her family could barely utter the words to describe what happened to the six-year-old. Over the past week, a wave of anger and repulsion has enveloped India in response to the gang rape and murder of a year-old vet in Hyderabad as she made her way home from work last Wednesday. The four men who allegedly carried out the attack deliberately deflated her scooter tyres, then waited. After offering her help, they allegedly dragged her to isolated scrubland by the side of the road, raped her, asphyxiated her and then dumped her body in a motorway underpass, before dousing it with kerosene and setting it alight. The four suspects were controversially shot dead by police on Friday. Yet while the horrific crime has prompted hundreds to take to the streets, and calls for lynching and hanging in parliament, it was far from an isolated incident.
Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Peter Umbuas pi said police are investigating the case from all angles, but neither confirmed nor denied receiving a copy of the video. However, he also said that the video of the alleged rape, purportedly involving seven SPM students, was not the main focus of their probe. The girl was found half-naked and crying in her school switch room after she was allegedly raped by two boys around 11am on Nov
