The complete innocent, Michael Jordon, is drawn into a web of secrecy and government secrets when a girl carrying a mysterious package gets into a taxi with him. When she is later murdered, Michael is the chief suspect and on the run. Martin Ransohoff Melville Tucker. Henry Rosenbaum David Taylor.
I felt much the same way about his last comedy, ''Stir Crazy,'' with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, and that movie went on to become one of the biggest moneymaking films of all time. Poitier from an original screenplay by Henry Rosenbaum and David Taylor, is virtually one long chase sequence that begins in Manhattan, goes to Boston, makes a short detour to Maine and winds up in the Arizona desert after a wild flight over the Grand Canyon. The stars are Mr. Wilder, who plays a mild-mannered Chicago architect suddenly suspected of murder while on a business trip in New York, and Gilda Radner, as a sympathetic mystery woman who's the only person in the United States who believes the architect's story. The major pursuers are the members of a gang of international spies, headed by Richard Widmark, plus members of the New York police and the United States Government's special security forces. The object of everyone's interest - the film's McGuffin - is a Top Secret computer tape. There are two genuine laughs in the entire film. The rest is not silence but noise, various Wilder shticks and some romancing between the two stars. They're more like Lily Tomlin and John Tavolta. Miss Radner is not ideally cast.
