A Master of Ceremonies is the official host of a staged event or similar performance. An MC usually presents performers, speaks to the audience, entertains people, and generally keeps the event moving. An MC may also tell jokes or anecdotes. Some use this word interchangeably with the term rapper or emcee, while for others the term denotes a conception and demonstration of the role indicative of skill and of connection to the wider culture. MC can often be used as a term of distinction, referring to an artist with good performance skills. James Brown had the lyrics, moves, and soul that greatly influenced a lot of rappers in hip-hop and arguably even started the first MC rhyme. The hip-hop group, A Tribe Called Quest, included this statement in the liner notes to their album Midnight Marauders :. At each event, there would be a master of ceremonies who would introduce the different musical acts and would say a toast in style of a rhyme, directed at the audience and to the performers. He would also make announcements such as the schedule of other events or advertisements from local sponsors.

Emceeing or rapping, simply put, is the primary vocal style in Hip Hop music characterized by spoken word or rhythmic chant. Singing is part of Hip Hop, and many vocalists utilize a kind of fusion between rapping and singing, but today I want to focus on emceeing, as it is arguably the most reliable indicator of Hip Hop music for listeners. The art of emceeing stems from the practice of oral history and oral tradition, which can be dated back to a concept in Western Africa called nommo. As a concept in philosophy, nommo is the power of words to shape reality, act upon objects and give life to ideas. This idea paved the way for traveling griots to rise in importance for African tribal communities. Griots cataloged mass amounts of knowledge and history in their minds to share it with people who had no other way of learning about places and ideas from outside of their immediate surroundings.
Rapping or rhyming , spitting , emceeing , or MCing is a musical form of vocal delivery that incorporates "rhyme, rhythmic speech, and street vernacular", which is performed or chanted in a variety of ways, usually over a backing beat or musical accompaniment. The earliest precursor to modern rap is the West African griot tradition, in which "oral historians", or "praise-singers", would disseminate oral traditions and genealogies, or use their rhetorical techniques for gossip or to "praise or critique individuals. Rap is usually delivered over a beat , typically provided by a DJ , turntablist , beatboxer , or performed a cappella without accompaniment. Stylistically, rap occupies a gray area between speech, prose, poetry, and singing. The word, which predates the musical form, originally meant "to lightly strike", and is now used to describe quick speech or repartee. It was part of the African American dialect of English in the s meaning "to converse", and very soon after that in its present usage as a term denoting the musical style. The English verb rap has various meanings, these include "to strike, especially with a quick, smart, or light blow", as well "to utter sharply or vigorously: to rap out a command". By the late s, when Hubert G. Brown changed his name to H. Rap Brown , rap was a slang term referring to an oration or speech, such as was common among the "hip" crowd in the protest movements, but it did not come to be associated with a musical style for another decade.
