Thousands of women stripped off for a mass naked swimming session in Ireland, smashing the skinny-dipping world record. A beach in Co Wicklow, Ireland, was awash with 2, women of all ages and backgrounds as they plunged into the water to raise funds for cancer. The skinnydip broke a world record set in Perth, Australia - where the water was about 10 degrees warmer. The dippers look cheerful as they put themselves up for the challenge. Some women were said to be nervous about stripping naked as it would mean revealing their mastectomy scars. On the day, however, "nobody cared". Follow the fundraising efforts here. Organiser Dee Featherstone said: "Half the people who were there either had cancer or were affected by cancer or were supporting somebody or remembering someone who had cancer - every woman had their own little story of why they did it. Those most concerned about dipping turned out to be the ones who stayed in the water for the longest period of time. Thousands charged into the Irish sea to support victims of cancer.

But, when I saw women skinny dipping, I felt fear at the idea of joining them instead of excitement. When I was younger, I avoided any scenario that might require disrobing in front of more than one person my partner preferably at a time. While others eagerly joined group experiences that involved women skinny dipping at remote hot springs or excitedly told stories about spur-of-the-moment nude swims in mountain lakes, I quietly hoped not to be put in such positions. I was just afraid of what people would think when they saw me naked.
